Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win a gold at the show piece event on Sunday September 17,2017. 22 year old Sindhu beats Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in Korea Open Finals. She took an hour and 23 minutes to get over the line as won by 22-20, 11-21, 21-18.
Few weeks ago, PV Sindhu settled for silver after she lost to Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara by 21-19, 20-22,22-20 in an hour and 50 minutes in the Women singles finals of the World Championship in Glasgow. Sindhu was left exhausted and elated at the same time but it did not go the distance like the World Championship Final.Sunday’s summit clash had all ingredients of another thrilling contest as the duo battled in long and intense rallies at SK Handball Stadium.
The Korea Open Final was a re-run of that match with the only difference being the name of the champion. She showed determination and great stubborness to lay claim to her third super series title of her career. She took revenge of her World Championship loss and jumped to world no.2 in the badminton rankings.
This was Sindhu’s fourth victory over Okuhara in eight career meetings. Three of those four victories have come in last 13 months. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar congratulated PV Sindhu for winning the Korea Open Super Series title in Seoul. India is immensely proud of her accomplishment, says PM. Tendulkar termed her win as a “victory like none other. You tried, You failed, You believed and in the end you are an inspiration for the nation”.
